Hi, the current desktop real estate is not large enough for my use. I often have windows covering each other. After using various ThinkPad with 4K resolutions and enlarged font size, I kind of like that. Besides the possibility of shortening the battery life, is there other reasons for Apple not to increase the native resolutions? When can we expect a MBP with higher native resolutions?

Apple laptop Retina displays are around ~225dpi and their effective resolution (in HiDPI mode) is half of their native resolution.

You could just run the MacBook in native (the 16", for example, has a native resolution of 3072‑by‑1920), however the text and icons would be very small. Hence why Apple offers various scaling options that offer lower effective resolutions, but allow for larger text and icons to improve readability.

You might want to try 2048 by 1280 or 1792 by 1120 as those would be similar to 4K at 150-200% scaling.

Thanks. Do you mean pressing Option+Scaled to choose the resolutions?

How come doing so does not show the list? It just shows 5 icons as if I did not press that Option key when I chose Scaled. I recall that last year I could get the list but not anymore. I am using 11.5.2?
