When do the phone contracts start?

Hey guys,

Never pre-ordered a phone (always just bought it in store). But lets say you are on straight talk's plan and then order an iphone 5, when does the contract actually start?

Do you sign a contract when you buy the phone, or when you activate it on your computer.

I am planning on letting the rest of my ST contract run through the end of September and also want a decent clear case before I start using my iphone 5.

If it helps at all, I pre-ordered mine on 11/7/11, and the contract coordinating to that phone expires on 11/7/13.
