Hello, I am looking to replace my second hand XR I use for work with a "new" phone this fall and I am on the fence.

I do not want an OLED iPhone so my choices are SE or Apple still sells refurbished iPhone 11 models (not worried about price, work is paying). I will leave that discussion of the PWM thread, but I do have a broader question I wonder if someone has some history on:

When does Apple remove refurbished models from its official refurbished store?

My concern is when the 15 launches, how long will the 11 stick around there? Currently, Apple lists every 12 and 13 variant in the refurbished store, but only the 11 for the 11 series.

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Tough to say but I believe Apple was still selling certified refurbished iPhone 8 models a few months into 2022. If they followed that path, the iPhone 11 should still be available a few months into 2024 but there are no guarantees.

Thank you! This is very helpful.

The other feedback is helpful as well and answers my questions.

You don’t need refurbished in US. Metro pcs stores and cricket wireless gives them for $50.

Bundled with a new contract… it’s not the same at all.
It is not a contract per-se, but postpaid. It is also cheaper than refurbished and you get brand new.

Cricket: Overall you will spend $0 (iphone 11) + $180 (3 month service pre-pay) + $90 (3 extra month service to unlock) = $270 and current trade-in value is $200 at apple.

Metro: You spend $0 iphone + first month $60 + activation ($25) + 5 month to unlock ($150) = $235 unlocked in 6 month but needs legwork.

I only see 64GB and I need an unlocked model to dual-SIM T-Mobile and Verizon.

If you know you’re going to get an iPhone 11 and price isn’t a factor… why wait? Pick one up now while the picking’s good.

For what it's worth, it looks like Apple has pulled the 11 from the certified refurbished store. The iPhone 11 filter option is now gone, not just grayed out.

Should have taken the advice to get one when I could!

They removed that quick! Must have seen your post 😉. If I’m honest my favourite iPhone so far was the iPhone 13 Pro Max. That battery lasted longer than my current iPhone 14 pro max! Which phone are you now leaning towards?

Hah, that would be my luck! I am leaning 15 or 15 Pro. If I have to go OLED, why not the latest and greatest?

Can’t go wrong with a pro model! I have had the pro max since the 11 and wouldn’t go back. I do use a iPhone 13 mini for work though but I could see it being my daily driver. Make sure you are quick with that 15 preorder when it goes live 😄

That’s too bad. I was considering a refurb 11 as the “cheapest possible option” if I decide not to go for the 15. The prices were really good! Once you get up to the 12’s price, it doesn’t feel like as great a deal…

If you live in the US, grab a new non-tmobile number from any store and port that out to MetroPCS. Pay $65 and walk away with new iphone 11.
Up to your preference put it in a drawer for 6 mos and it will be unlocked for use with any carrier. Or keep paying minimal amounts on cheapest plan and unlock by month 6.
Or port out your existing number.
This is all worth if you need to have exactly 11.

Just out of curiosity, you're saying someone could do the following:

Go to Xfinity and get a $15 a month plan.
Got to Metro and port that number in.
Pay $65 for the first month of service.
Quit paying.
Wait six months.
Phone will be unlocked and you can do whatever you want with it.

That would be an iPhone 11 64GB for $80.

Yes, this is totally correct.
Some edits:
1) Go to metro corporate store and not authorized dealer. Their website has the map so you can choose the closest one.

PS. It is all yours when you buy it - you just can’t use other carriers for calls for 6 month. Last time i traded the phone right away with bestbuy because they run a promo with higher tradein than apple. You can also trade that in to apple for $200 towards new iphone or gift card right away. Gains are minimal($200-$80) but still the arbitrage ops exists.

Interesting! Have you actually done this?!

My carrier says you must have service on the activated phone for at least six months before they'll unlock it. In other words, you won't be able to unlock it if you pay for only 1 month and stop paying!

That's done for the very reason of preventing people from buying a discounted phone at a low price and the carrier not recouping the discount.

Maybe the two-carrier switch somehow overcomes that…

Your carrier might be correct. Yes, that is made to stop people from doing it.

So far Metro is the only one who doesn’t enforce it: i paid only 1 month for my sister’s phone and it got unlocked on day 181. This only works with metro, hence called metro drawer method.

So you paid $80 for the iPhone? Did that not affect your credit score if you stopped paying and kept the iPhone? Only asking because this would never work in the UK and you would be blacklisted so would find it very difficult to get accepted for a loan etc in the future

Yeah I don't get the "quit paying" part. Don't they recoup the cost of the phone if you drop the plan?

(Not that I plan to go to these lengths personally...)

I personally did not.
I bought 2 numbers from bestbuy for $10 each.
I paid $120 and bought 2 SE2020 from other carrier.
Once i got those SEs, then i ported out from other carrier to Metro and got 2 Iphone 12 minis(1 month after release) but had to pay $112 for each when done.
I then gave 1 to my sister - she is using till today unlocked.
My personal 12 mini 1 month later went to Bestbuy - i signed up with t-mobile and paid $70 - traded 12 mini for 13 mini. Asked tmobile to unlock it and sold on facebook cause needed money (broke student at the time).
Basically got 13 mini the day of release for $252 and flipped for $720.

Currently i own iphone 11 128gb that i bought from cricket for $205 (phone $50+$180(3 month of service)-$25 refer friend credit).

The next answer, let me group your messages in quote because the answer would be relevant to both.

Yes, the blacklisting and credit score dropping is a thing if you sign-up for postpaid service, which is quite popular in US. Postpaid is when the carrier checks your score and decides to extend you a cell service on a goodwill - you first use calls and 5g for 30 days and then you pay it later within another 20 days.
So you are always use first and pay later. The same applies to phones: you usually get it for "free" or cheap because they give you your discount over the 36 month and you also signed loan contract when buying it.

Metro is all Prepaid. Meaning that i first pay my next 30 day service upfront today and then have that service until next payday. If i decide that i do not want to continue, then I am free to walk away - they will just suspend my number and I will lose it after 2 month with no payment.
It doesn't affect credit, because i owe them nothing and they owe me nothing because i prepay for my service. Should i decide not to pay then they will provide no service.

There is no recoup part because that is how the small print reads and the promo designed. For 1 person leaving them with a cheap phone there will be 999 that are left stuck with them for the next 10 years.

As part of the deal, you get the phone for free because you move your number from other carrier which is a legwork and stress for some. They pay to get you as a client and this is a discount that they willing to live with because they sign-up people for $65 plan if you opt for discounted phone. You can lower it next month, but then again how many people would bother changing their account settings to switch to $30 plan. And besides, unlimited is $60-$80 around everywhere anyway.
