When does Time Machine consolidate?

I read that Time Machine consolidate hourly backups daily, then from daily to weekly. However, my Time Machine HD is NOT connected 24/7. I connect it every night at around 11:00pm - 1:00am. It looks like it is NOT combining the hourly backups to daily to weekly. Any way to make force it to save drive space?
