When I signed into iCloud for the first time and signed out, I lost all my contacts

Is there anyway to have my contacts without being signed onto iCloud? The only reason I don't want to be signed into iCloud all the time is for battery life... if it doesn't hurt battery life then I guess I don't care.

Also, seeing lots of duplicate contacts when I do sign into iCloud and get my contacts

It really doesn't hurt battery life unless you've got it set to backup, and you're on a wifi network. Then it may backup things you don't already have on your iCloud profile. Even then the biggest hit comes with the first backup, after that it's incremental.

Just disable the various backups, with the exception of contacts cause you'll probably always want a copy of those, and you'll be fine.
