When I switch to AT&T

I'm going to get an iPhone 4 and it'll be my first time with my own phone account. I'll be a student, and I have a couple of questions:

Can I get AT&T's student rates purchasing a phone through the Apple online store or should I order from AT&T?

Will I have to make a deposit or anything besides just starting a new account?

Will I be able to switch my phone number from another carrier?
