When networking my Mac does not display just external drives?

I network between my MBP and iMac and sometimes, quite often actually, when I choose Go > Network and choose my iMac from my MBP it does not show the iMac as an option to connect to, instead it just shows the external drives that are connected to it. How can I correct this?
