When should i cancel new 3gs line I bought so it shows up in system?

I bought a new 3gs line from radio shack on memorial day... im going to be taking it back now that the i4 is in fact coming out in June..

quesiton is, will it take a few days to show up in att's system that the line is eligible for a new phone or can i return it on the14th and preorder new on the 15th?

IMHO I'd say the sooner the better. Someone might say 3 days before but what it it needed 10 days? just my $0.02

Radio Shack is carrying the new iPhone 4 on release day so why not simply take it back and exchange it for the new iPhone without issue?

Because I have to pre-order and i cant preorder if its showing me as having a new 3gs on that line... i need the line free or not even opened.. unless i open like a 4th line which i dont want to do..
