If you could find them, same price. When Apple releases a new lineup, the old ones are no longer for sale and your only option would be to get a refurbished model.
 
Typically you can find leftovers here and there at small retailers, at around the refurb price, but only for a month or two, and you really have to dig to find them. There will be refurbs in the refurb store for quite a while, usually at around a 10-15% discount from the original price.
 
I would have thought that there would be a significant price drop in the old ones to get rid of their stock. Apple must have their stock levels planned perfectly so that they don't loose much if anything.

Shame as I like the current MBP's and would definately not mind picking one up a lot cheaper than the (allbeit rumoured) new update versions!

No, Apple does not take a hit on the hardware in the manner you suggest. They shift inventories to places where sales are still high (note the hundreds of Best Buy stock level threads....).
