I wonder in the past, Apple released unlocked iPhone at apple retail store on same date that iPhone was launched or they just have the ones with contracts? Looking for buy unlocked iPhone real soon.

This is correct. Just GSM networks.
But I believe the OP's question is do they sell factory unlocked iPhones on launch day. The answer is no. It normally takes a few months before this is done.
FWIW, buying an AT&T phone off contract launch day should net you the same difference. As soon as you plug into iTunes it will be unlocked for all GSM networks.
You need to clarify your response. iPhones direct from Apple are NOT necessarily unlocked unless you buy an unlocked model at full price. Apple also "directly" sells AT&T (locked/subsidized) phones as well. Your reply made it seem like ANY iPhone from Apple is unlocked which is definately not the case.
