Nearly three months have passed by since Apple last released new devices, but the AirTag could be receiving an update fairly soon, according to rumors.

Last year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a new AirTag would be released around the middle of 2025. In February, a leaker known as Kosutami claimed that Apple planned to release a new AirTag in May or June this year. If these timeframes remain accurate, an AirTag 2 could launch within the next month. If so, perhaps the AirTag 2 will be announced during the WWDC 2025 keynote on Monday, June 9.

Three upgrades have been rumored for the AirTag 2 so far:
  • A second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, for up to 3× longer range compared to the current AirTag. The chip debuted in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding for People feature that can help you to find your friends in crowded places, and it offers a range of up to 200 feet (approximately 60 meters).
  • A more tamper-proof speaker, as a safety measure to reduce stalking.
  • Improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro.
No major design changes are expected.

The original AirTag was announced during an Apple Event in April 2021. In the U.S., an individual AirTag costs $29, and a set of four costs $99.

Other new devices announced by Apple this year so far include the iPhone 16e in February, followed by a range of updated Mac and iPad models in March. The company also released Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds, a new Pride Edition Sport Band for the Apple Watch, Beats charging cables, and a few other accessories.

how can we have integration with Vision Pro when they left UWB out of Vision Pro entirely? I know when AirTags first launched and UWB was put in phones they made it seems like the Vision Pro that was still coming at the time would be the big use case... then it launched with nothing...

Will be a very minor update with possibly only an increase in the range. It could be announced even during the September event.

I‘d really, really like to see charging on an AirPods stand. Might not last a year, like a battery, but even three months with regular warnings to recharge would be good. I travel with a three-way charger: iPhone, Watch, and AirPods. Job done.

This would be a real PITA unless you owned a single airtag, or it was a prominent one like your keys.

Having to recharge and replace any number of airtags in and on other devices would be a huge chore. One that if you didnt stay ahead of, the cost and chance of it being dead when you need it most is too high.

FWIW you can do this today with rechargeable 2032s, or one of the mods to make the airtag take a AA cells.

Curious to see how long it will take for hackers to bypass the more tamperproof speaker.
(and 'more' is good as v1 is zero tamperproof)

It'll be a shame if they don't include the one update that would be extremely useful, and that a lot of people want, a loop of some sort for it to be attached to things without awkward accessories (I guess the accessories make them too much money).

I'm actually pretty excited for the one change we will likely get - increased range to 200 feet.

I've only been using an AirTag for disc golf (attached to the bottom of the disc with a Pelican case, I finally figured out is the way to go) and increasing the range to 200 from around 30 feet would be fantastic for me.

I'm not good and the courses around me are heavily forested. Being able to throw harder without worrying about losing another disc will help me improve. And then at some point I won't need a tracker on the bottom of my discs. I can throw a medium distance but at the end of my throws they tend to fade way off to the side, if anyone has any tips :)

The third-party credit card-shaped Find My trackers are pretty good, but lack precision finding (because Apple keeps that proprietary).
According to traditional Apple logic, everyone has their wallet in their phone so no need for flat trackers that fit in old school wallets.

Wouldn’t having an Airtag attached to the disc cause all sorts of problems with your throws?
