When to Expect the AirTag 2 to Launch

Apple released its AirTag item tracker in April 2021. The accessory has not received any hardware updates since, but there have been rumors about a new model.

Below, we recap rumors about when the second-generation AirTag might be released, as well as potential new features to expect.

Timing

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman both expect the next AirTag to be released in 2025.

In October 2023, Kuo said mass production of the second-generation AirTag had been postponed from the fourth quarter of 2024 until some point in 2025, but he did not provide a reason for the apparent change in plans.

Gurman echoed this revised timeframe in his Power On newsletter last Sunday.

"Apple considered launching its second-generation AirTags in 2024, but I'm now told new versions aren't likely to hit the market until 2025," he wrote.

Features

Kuo believes the new AirTag will have some kind of integration with Apple's upcoming Vision Pro headset, but he has not shared any specific details.

Gurman expects the new AirTag to feature an upgraded wireless chip, but he did not elaborate on what this would mean. It is possible that the AirTag could be updated with the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip that debuted in all iPhone 15 models last year, which would pave the way for improved location accuracy for item tracking.

I know Chipolo makes a model, but I'd love to see them to a credit card shaped model so I can ditch this Tile version my wife got me.

I hope that too. Unfortunately Apple doesn't have an interest in us carrying our wallets, or knowing even where it is! Quite the opposite, so I won't be holding my breath.
 
Current air tag is great for my uses. So, no complaints. I welcome any improvements on it, though which makes it better on any perspectives. Keep calm and be happy on what air tags currently offers and will offer in the future improvements! 😊 Life is too short to be unhappy 😊

I wonder what new features an airtag 2 would feature, more range? Battery life is okay.
 
Would be cool if you put the Vision on and at first see a faint glow through walls with a pulsating warm light while coming closer as if it was light-emitting.

It's a lot more power than a simple radio blip over BLE. I'm not sure what it adds to the system though-- the only way an AirTag can communicate its position out is through an iPhone and the iPhone already has a GPS position.
 
it should be able to automatically recognize frequently visited places to avoid sending false positives. The volumen of the sound should be incremental, it doesn’t have strong enough volumen for example when the AirTag is deep in a backpack. It should be able to act as a beacon, for example when you are in the mountain with your friends. You leave the AirTag in a certain place then you can find your way back and it notifies the rest of the group when someone is in range of x meters.

I solved that problem with one of these. An AirTag clip is an optional extra. Bit expensive for a wallet though!

It would be lovely if Apple would integrate the Tracking through iMessage for Android, so EVERY phone would track Apple's AirTag, this way we could catch more criminals and make finding things even easier!

It’s wild they’re that far away. Wasn’t there proof that was found that the OG Airtag was intended to launch early 2020? Regardless I’d love one with the U2, because the tracking between the S9 Apple watch and the iPhone 15 is so much faster and better.

The equivalent product now uses U1 chip(90nm I remember?) for positioning, while the U2 chip which was built in the iPhone 15 series was upgraded to 7nm. It's a great upgrade for saving energy and better two-way positioning. I hope to see Airtag 2 after the upcoming WWDC 2024, with or without a special introduction during the conference.
 
Not expecting it to be launched soon. New colour options will be good.
