When Upgrading, what happens to my current settings

hi all.

as the title says. when i upgrade to snowleopard (which i would be crazy not to at that price...) what will happen to my current settings and programs, will i be able to get a clean install?

i'm assuming the upgrade will be relatively similar to how tiger -- > leopard, however i'm still relatively new to macs to any info on this would be great.
