When watch is at home phone won't receive calls

I have searched high and low and just can't seem to find the keywords that get a meaningful result.

With both my phone (X on 12.1.1) and my wife's phone (X on 12.1) any calls to us will quickly ring once on our phone and then go to voicemail if we leave our watches at home. If we have the watches with us the calls ring through just fine.

Both of us are on verizon.

I am sure I am just missing something silly, but it is driving us nuts.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. Just tested this and the call went through just fine. I also tested receiving a call in that condition and it came through to the watch.
Very odd.
