We know with almost 100% certainty that Apple will drop the iPhone 4 in the fall of 2014. However, Apple is still offering the iPad 2 because it is the latest 9.7" iPad model that does not have a retina display.

If the iPad 5 lives up to the rumors about weight, size, charge time and battery life, then I see it as very likely that Apple will discontinue the sales of iPad 2 from that point.

Although I've got one and I like it, I'd say when the 5th gen is released. The "cheap" iPad option will be the mini. iPad 2 doesn't have retina or Siri, which doesn't fit Apple's big selling points for iOS devices (this is assuming the next mini has a retina display) and I'd assume iOS 7 would be the last OS it will be able to run, if that.

Well, i dont really care because Ipad mini uses the same apps as Ipad 2 which is non-retina. So even if they drop the 2, developer would still make the non retina version of the apps because mini is a hugh hit.

Thanks Apple for making such ugly screen of the mini and still manage to sell lots.

Even if they do drop the iPad 2, they will at least have to give it iOS 7 if anything.

They must!!!

Because they will for sure give Ipad mini ios7 because of its popularity and if Ipad 2 dont get one then there will be much complains, i mean really. A lot of complains.

i can live without siri because it is stupid but i would love to have ios7 at least on one of my devices (iphone 4, ipad 2)

Knowing Apple, we will get iOS 7 for the version number with most of the key features being reserved for the flagship devices.

Most likely when the new model comes out. Although the new model may have the same margins that the 4 has. So perhaps they may not make a less expensive iPad available and simply have the 5 and the mini.

Looks like most of us forum users think Apple will drop the iPad 2 when they release the iPad 5. The statistics say approximately 80% of all the users that responded thus far chose the first option.

At the same price point as the iPad 2, with a 16 GB configuration, the iPad Mini is the cheaper option, and for educational purposes, it can't be beat. It's just the perfect size for little hands or for long reading sessions. When the Retina iPad Mini is released, I could see them either just doing away with the iPad 2 or making the current iPad Mini the new "budget iPad".
