I was thinking about this, and was wondering is the reason apple hasn't gone with an upgrade sooner, is because with the size of the display it would be almost impossible to see any improvement? I mean once your eye can no longer distinguish pixels on a screen this size, is there any reason to upgrade retina until we have a screen size upgrade?

Once your eyes cannot distinguish between pixels (around 300+ppi) there isn't really anymore benefit to cramming in more just to say "1080p screen!" thats more for spec geeks. Of course if they make the screen physically bigger then they will adjust the PPI for the "retina" moniker but really there isn't any benefit besides that on a mobile phone.

If anything, cramming in more pixels just to stuff the spec sheet has a negative effect as it messes up battery life.

Sticking more pixels in the current phone won't do anything but suck down more power.
