Well this is strange.

I had over 3,800 pictures on my 4S, and imported them into iPhoto. Maybe about 20% of those photos had already been put into iPhoto, but I never deleted them off the phone. I decided to just import everything.

I let iPhoto import all the photos, and chose "do not import duplicates". After a while, iPhoto said all pictures had successfully been imported. There was almost 10GB of photos on the phone, and my Mac showed a 10GB drop in HD space. Then I chose to "delete pictures from camera". After a long time, it froze up and I had to Force Quit the application.

I reopened iPhoto, there was a new event, with only 169 pictures. There was also a message saying there were new pictures found on the computer that needed to be imported. I let that run. It created a Recovered Photos album with only 867 pictures, bringing it to just over 1,000 photos imported (out of over 3,800).

On the phone itself, there are 2,642 photos in the Camera Roll. I've just now imported those onto an external using Image Capture. But combined with what is showing in iPhoto, I'm still over 200 pictures short. Where are they? And why would I lose 10GB for only 1,000 pictures imported? I figured all of these photos have to be somewhere on my HD; I've been digging through Finder and I just can't find the others.
