Just wondering if anyone knows whether IBM/Hitachi have announced production of 80G 7200rpm drives, or if there are murmurings about when those might come out. I am waiting to replace my 80G stock 4200 drive with it... tempted by the 60G 7K60 but I need the extra space.

Does anyone know anything about this? I couldn't find much on the web.

I also heard that Seagate had put out drives labeled 7200rpm that turned out to be 5400. Will they have 7200 drives soon, and if so, any opinions on IBM/Hitachi vs. Seagate for the drives? I'm hoping for lots of extra speed without noticeably difference in noise or battery stamina, which is what the 7K60 seems to provide.

Seagate was supposed to have 80/100GB 7200rpm drives coming out in the late fall - must have had some delays, just search their site.

Thanks - I did, and all I found was the 5400 drive. Arggh. I am planning on switching out my 4200 and putting it in an enclosure for backup; this will free my 120G drive for archival stuff, which I need badly.

So there aren't any rumors about an IBM/Hitachi 80G drive? That seems to be the one with all the rave reviews, so I'd probably be more likely to go with them.

Here's the release:

I also emailed them about these drives and when they will go on sale.
