I want to customize some of my desktop icons but I don't want to lose the originals. Where are they stored? I have tried searching my system for "icons" but I can't find any of the artwork for the folder icons such as Movies, Downloads, etc.

You can pretty easily copy-paste icons onto files and folders in the Info window (Cmd-I), then revert back to the original simply by pressing the backspace key.

A lot of the generic system icons are in the /Contents/Resources folder of the /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle package (to view the contents of a package, right-click on it and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu). Icons specific to an application can be found inside the application package.

Many thanks. :)
