At the risk of sounding dumb :), what happened to the macbooks on apple's site? For the last couple of days, they've only had airs and MBPs.

You're a bit late in noticing.

Update: We just received word from Apple that the MacBook has, in fact, been discontinued.

Update 2: While the notebook will be discontinued for individual consumers, Apple will continue to make it available to educational institutions.

Is there any place that still has these available new? I'm looking at getting one as a gift without having to spend the heavy price tag of a MBP. Would prefer not to use eBay if possible.

just go with a MBP or an Air ... the Macbooks were killed off for good reason

I don't really feel like paying the extra price for an MBP or 13" Air when it will be used as a secondary computer around the house by the person I'm getting it for. 11" is too small to do anything with IMO. Guess it's off to eBay.

You might have luck at authorized resellers that have back inventory.
I was in Fry's a few weeks ago and they still had MacBooks for sale.

The 13" MBP is only $200 more than the MB price. Also, the 11" MBA has a higher screen resolution than (and the same size keyboard as) the MB/13" MBP. So if the MB is big enough to do stuff on, the 11" MBA is also "big enough" to do stuff on. I understand if you don't like the pixel density of the 11" MBA, but it's just as "big" as the MB when it comes to what you can get on the screen.
