I want to use some of the Leopard backgrounds (from Apple) on my bootcamp XP desktop. How can I access the image files?

If you're talking about the "default" Leopard background, then it is now placed here:
/System/Library/CoreServices/DefaultDesktop.jpg

Change that JPEG file and you change the default background.
