I really don't understand wal-mart and that $2 bull crap savings lmao... seems worthless to me...anyway, ebay or craigslist is the best way to go. Always check feedback though, very important.

In the US none of the iPhone 3G providers will sell you an iPhone 3G without a contract. This includes; Apple, AT&T, BestBuy and Walmart. AT&T has a forward looking statement that they may offer the iPhone 3G without a contract in the future for $599 (8GB) / $699 (16GB).

So as you can see if you want one without a contract, you will have to pay more than $199 / $299 or by saving $2 at Walmart. Just buy one with a contract and cancel the contract, pay the $175 ETF and other fees. What is some important about not having a "Contract"? The contract is how they lower the purchase price.

I though At&t already said they would sell iphone with out contract at $599 and $699? And yes you can always go the route of signing up and canceling. I think it comes out to around $580 for the 16gb iphone 3g.

It's a network dependent feature. The only networks that support it right now are the ones that will sell you an iPhone 3G to start with...

Just a heads up you only get warranty coverage from the country you bought the phone from; so if you iPhone 3G dies or something, SOL.
