Bought a mid2012 MBP. Seller showed pictures that Sierra was installed but he reset it and the OS has to be reinstalled. When arrived it greeted me with the page where you choose the region. Also there was a voice talking, so this was already suspect.
Rebooted with Option key as I wanted to see if there is a recovery partition. It is not, so I clicked the only bootable device avaible, internal SSD.
Something booted from there, asked me for an internet connection, what I blocked, telling I have no internet. Still it continued to install (mentioning some functions need an internet connection) and after a few other choices I am no running Catalina. (Not the newest version though, it wants to do some updates.)
So where did it get Catalina if I told him not to connect to any wireless net (and have no ethernet connected). Sure, there is a non-password protected net, it could have connected to that. But the install was way to fast (maybe 3-4 minutes), so I doubt it downloaded a complete installation on that open but very slow connection.
