Where did my external hard drive go?

I have an eMac with a maxtor external hard drive attached. I don't utilize it as well as I should, but that is for a different discussion board. My problem is that it has dissapeared from my desktop and finder. This happened once before but it showed up again some how. I've checked the firewire and power cord, but no use. I've done a couple re-starts to see if it would magically show up again. It hasn't. Any ideas?

If you eject it by either dragging it to the trashcan or clicking eject then it will just not show up, you have to turn it off manualy and turn it on again so it detects it again, there must be a way to detect it without turning it on/off, but i just dont know.
