Where do Fonts go?

Does anyone know where fonts go to when you choose 'Remove Font' in Font Book? are they deleted?

All that happens is that an entry is added to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ATS.plist for that font. The OS simply pretends that fonts listed as disabled aren't there, they aren't moved or deleted.
