where do I start?

I'll be getting my new MacBook Pro next week according to ups, 2 ?s, where do I start and what to look for or chek? (I might sound stupid, but this is my 1st. mac, thanks). I'd like to buy extended care from someone local, how do I check if its valid and if compatable with new macbook pro'?
