Where do the menu item "Open recent..." file links live?

For all my programs except MS Office and the Finder, going to File > Open recent > filename doesn't open anything, although the files themselves are listed.

Any thoughts? Corrupt .plist? Broken link? Bad permissions (although I've repaired permissions)?
