A Planet Orbiting Sol!
I'm interested in getting a NEW 12" PowerBook (for UNDER $900 :)) Any suggestions?

(Yes, I know it is a slow machine but I already have a white (and easy access to a black) MB + Alu 22 iMac: I just want it for its non-widescreen, matte display and form factor!)

Ebay and don't pay anywhere near $900

When you say new, you specifically want a sealed-in-box powerbook? Good luck with that. You're probably going to have to do a lot of waiting around to find one. If you're willing to get a used or refurb one, they're plentiful, but unlike iPods, it's a lot less likely that someone would buy a whole notebook computer and have it sit around without opening it up. Plus they've been out of manufacture so long that the number of sources who still have them on shelves is pretty nil.

I fear you'll be quite disappointed once you use it for a week or so and realize that the difference in dimensions isn't all that large, the widescreen is better for everything except 4:3 TV viewing and the resolution is frustrating if you've ever used anything bigger, and the computer itself is just underpowered by modern standards.

For reference, the PB is slightly thicker, about the same depth front to back, and about 2 inches less wide. I would give a lot more than 2 inches and glossy instead of matte to get the WAY faster machine and more screen real estate.

I would say get it used on eBay w/ no less than 1.5GHz and any amount of RAM, 80GB HD, and running tiger or leopard (your preference), for about $600. Then upgrade RAM to 1.25. And watch out for dead pixels and especially dents on eBay, as old powerbooks are often dented or warped.

well..they do make macbookairs..which are close?

The Macbook Air isn't as small, but would be faster. If the thread starter wants a faster CPU, no optical drive, and the same performance in graphics, the Macbook Air would be the machine to go with for twice the price.

Yah, I'm serious. Id like it just for my growing Apple collection...

I guess it is unreasonable to expect new, sealed-in-box PBs now :(

Oh well... will just live with my black MB that is 3x as fast and has a brighter (but sadly glossy) screen :)

Oh, as a collector, sure, you can get one. But you're asking to pay less than the original retail price. You'd have to get really lucky for that. If you're willing to throw around $1400 or 1500, of course, you can probably find a new PB12" within a couple of weeks....

There were a couple of sealed 12" PB's on eBay about 6 months ago... IIRC one went for $1200 and one for $1500.

Mine is as closed to sealed as I think you'd get. It looks simply gorgeous (knock on wood). However, I'm not letting it go! It's still my baby.
