where does ipod save its preferences

Hi, i have ipod photo 30 Gb, and i first synchronized it with my PC, with automatocally synch option. If i then want to set it as manually configure the ipod and use it as hard disk, and if i plug the ipod to my friend's computer which have itunes as well and he have ipod that automatically synch his ipod with his computer's itunes, will my ipod then be automatically synch with his itunes (if it store the ipod's preferences on the computer) but if it save the preferences in the ipod, then if i plug my ipod to my friend's computer, it'll detect as a hard drive right? Thanks

for disk use for both Mac/PC i would set up the pod on a PC and in iTunes Prefs set ipod with disk use - then you can use the files on both PC/Mac (fat32 i think)
