where has photo stream gone?

Seems like maybe Photo Stream photos > 30 days old are gone?
Yeah I can understand that they're removed from the cloud, but the local copies should still be there.
I already pruned my old photo stream of hundreds of junk photos, now I'll get to do it all over again when I upgrade my wife's iPhone to iOS8 and enable iCloud photos.
