I think Apple learned their lesson with the 3G activation problems. They won't be doing any huge launches anytime soon.

I'd bet they'll start releasing iTunes 8 slowly to different servers throughout the day. People in different time zones might see it show up at different times. All so they can keep an eye on it and not let it get out of hand.

I'd bet iPhone 2.1 software is ready today, but they're holding it to Friday for the same reason.

They don't want the same bad publicity all over again.
 
Wow... I downloaded the update after installing the Front Row and QuickTime updates (this is on an iMac). When I try to start iTunes, it just crashes instantly. Fantastic stuff.
