I can hear when the fan kicks in on the 13" Air, but I don't see where the vent is that it's drawing air from. Anyone enlighten me?

Somewhere in the manual/documentation it says to always use the Air on a hard surface so that you won't interfere with cooling. When the fan comes on you can feel the air being directed down from the hinge as it comes out. I think you have a good question. Does the air go in and out at the hinge?

In through the keyboard and out through the hinge.

There is one heat pipe that connects both the GPU and CPU heatsink to the fan. The fan is pushing air out of a small section on the power adapter side of the screen hinge. The air intake spans all the way across the screen hinge.

In regards to this information, I'm currently researching cooling systems and finding that most are relatively useless. Any suggestions on a way to keep the laptop at safe operating temperatures when the processor is under continuous strain from say, gaming?

There is air intake from under the display hinge.. When fan runs high you can feel the air from there. Since i use my MBA on my bed my fingers are always resting/covering part of that up. That's how i knew.
