I've been experimenting with changing default icons, but want to ensure I can get back to the original icons if I choose. I've located the majority of .icns icon files in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources but I can't seem to find the actual Macintosh HD disk icon.

Does anyone know where this icon image lives?

How did you change it originally? If you simply pasted the icon into the Get Info window, you simply select it and hit the delete key from the same place. If not, I have no clue what you could have done to change it, but check in /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/. Somewhere in it's contents should be that icon, if I recall correctly.

To get back to a default icon, simply delete the icon you changed.

How to change the icon for any disk, app, file or folder

Ok, thanks for this, but I still would like a copy of the .icns file...

I can't find the .icns file in the Finder.app file. Any other idea where it may be?

Problem solved. I installed an app called Find any File which can search in system files and packaged contents. I searched my entire Mac for all .icns files and copied them to a separate folder. This included the Macintosh HD icon of course...:p

For future reference to all, the default Macintosh HD icon file is located here:

/System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext/Contents/Resources

Labeled Internal.icns

Thank you!

A hidden locked file (.icns) had been thwarting the deletion of my trash for years. With FindAnyFile I was finally able to find the file, unlock it, and delete it. It's A New Day! Thank You.
