This may seem like a dumb question, but some people say you should buy it off Amazon because the tax is pretty heavy when you buy it at the Apple store. Is this true?

I bought mine from bhphotovideo.com

They have custom configs (I got the 13" i7/8/256), cheaper AppleCare ($95), free copy of Parallels or Bento, and no tax.

The MBA in 13.3" cheapest configuration is $1139.99. Best Buy sold me my MBA for $1100 + tax. It was slightly higher, but BB does give me the option of taking it back rather than mailing it back to Amazon.

Also if you want an accidental warranty. I am generally very careful with my computer, but you never know what might happen to a back pack with the Air inside when riding my longboard to and from class.

I think you have to think about the return policy too, if there's any chance you're not 100% sure about the model you're choosing.

If I'm reading B&H's correctly, you can't return a (working) laptop once you've opened the 'manufacturer's packaging'. Buying directly from Apple should mean no-hassle returns for 14 days. BB and Amazon also have more generous return policies. Amazon requires return by mail, which may be an inconvenience or may not matter at all.

I don't think BHPhoto do BTO MBP, or do they?

I have been getting my MBA and MBP online at Apple via my academic discount. It's not a lot but little here and there saves my money.

I was all set to go with Amazon to save the sales tax, but I needed the One to One that Apple offers. With this being my first Mac, I needed the help.

I'm copying a post I made in a similar thread since it's relevant

For me, it was apple.com. I am a student living in maryland (6% tax). I have a discover card and my birthday is in July (5% cashback from apple store orders + 2% additional for my birthday month). I wanted the same model [i5/8/128].

Student price for the base model: $1149

Add $90 for the 8GB upgrade: $1239
7% cashback via discover: -$86
6% Tax: +$74
Total after cashback and tax: $1227
Adding the $100 Gift card: $1127

...you can sell the gift card for a good amount. You may also find some uses for it for your new Mac or mobile apps if you have an iPhone.
