I was going to get a 500GB hard drive to replace my 160GB hard drive in my white macbook. I was wondering where's the best place to backup the data online before changing it out? Carbonite? Tips and advice please!

The best way is to buy an external drive you can use to backup your machine on a regular basis as well as for the transfer. Online backups are expensive and slow, especially on the upload (unless you have a good symmetric connection).

For replacing your present drive, buy a hard drive enclosure, put your new 500Gb drive in it. Then connect it to your Mac, format it and then make a clone of your Mac's HD using Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper. Then swap the drives, putting the 160 drive in the enclosure as an initial backup.

This.

I used that.
