I'm probably just being a little too idealistic. I love the shops where you dig through dozens of milk crates for used records for $2-$5 (the quality is sometimes a crapshoot, but that adds to the fun of the chase), but I live in a small town that doesn't have a shop like that. I doubt I'd find its couterpart online

I live in a town of about 10,000 and we have 3 thrift stores (which is what it sounds like you are referring to.)

The places (as far as brick and mortar stores go) to find vast collections of used vinyl are usually independent music shops. Some headshops also sell albums.
 
If there's a Half Price Books near you, they have good deals on used records, some are better than others. Music Stack is probably your best bet for online stuff though.
