I think it will be a while before we see iphone 3gs unlocked

I was hoping Apple would free up their strict guidelines and allow for unlocked phones to be purchased....albiet will be more costly...but still some of us need other carriers...

Apple has no guidelines! It is up to the carrier to offer it unlocked. AT&T has an agreement with Apple to be the sole provider of the iPhone in the US. AT&T decides if they want to provide an unlocked version of the phone not Apple.

If you want a factory unlocked iPhone 3GS, you need to travel to Italy and get one there.

Apple is selling direct to consumers factory unlocked models of the iPhone 3G S which will work on any network worldwide !!

There is no lock and so even with future OS upgrades from apple there will be no problems !!

Check to see if you can get lower airfares to Italy or (IIRC) Belgium.

Any other countries with cheap flights from the U.S. (and a good reason to take a short vacation there anyway)?

Sorry but this is only to Apple customers that have a mailing address in Australia.

You can't change the country option so this is of limited use unless you are planning a trip to OZ.

iPhone 3GS is available here in Australia unlocked directly from Apple and Apple only. It's a small fortune to buy one unlocked but at least the option is there
