Where to buy iPhone 4S without contract / full retail price?

Hey guys,

Is it possible to buy the new iPhone 4S without contract / full retail price in the USA?
I read somewhere people were able to buy it, but I'm not sure.

I will go to the USA next week and I would like to buy one.

Note that these phones will NOT be unlocked to work with carriers outside the U.S.

Note: Some people here have reported success in buying unlocked 4S direct at the Apple stores, but it seems it may be hit and miss.

Just be aware that buying a phone off-contract/full retail price does not mean it is unlocked. As of now unlocked phones are not available for purchase.
