Hi Guys,

I am planing to upgrade the HDD in a 2010 13" macBookpro.

I am aware that I would need what is called pentalobe screwdrivers...

Please where in the UK can I buy a decent set of this + other removal tools I will need for the HDD upgrade process

cheers

You do not need a Pentalobe screwdriver, you need one Phillips 00 Screwdriver and one T6 Torx Screwdriver.

MacBook, MacBook Pro: Replacing the Hard Disk Drive, transferring data to the new HDD

the guide includes:
  • 0. Identify your MacBook or MacBook Pro
  • 1. Getting a new HDD
  • 2. Guides to replace the internal HDD with a newer one
  • 3. Transferring data from the old HDD to the new HDD
  • 4. Using the optical disk drive (ODD) slot for placing an SSD or HDD inside the MB/P (OPTIBAY)

Thanks very much for the links and the correction!, very informative.
If I was going to perform the upgrade but swaping the Optical disc out, where in the uk can I buy the necessary kits to complete the optical drive swap? will this work?
cheers

Yes, that caddy will theoretically work, but if it actually works, is up to testing it out.

As for the tools you need, the ones I mentioned earlier are all the tools you need. You should get them at any good sorted hardware store or some of those retails stores that sell home improvement kits. Most often they can be found in those bins near the checkout lines. Even some of those electronic chain stores sell kits with all the tools needed to take apart electronic equipment. As I am not from the UK, I can not recommend any specific store though, and Curry's (sp?) is probably dead already.

I'd highly recommend this kit - http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/p...ion-screwdriver-bit-set?da=1&TC=SRC-precision

Very high quality for the price, and includes everything (bar a pentalobe screwdriver) that you need for every MBP (excluding retinas) and iMacs.

For UK Suppliers, I would recommend Maplin (www.maplin.co.uk) because that's where I got *my* tools, and they are excellent.

The correct screwdrivers can be had for a few ££ and I've had my set for a few years and they've done sterling service on a number of electronic devices.
