Is there any advantage to buying from a particular source? Particularly regarding service after purchase?

Curious if there is a way to get custom Macs other than online?

Apple Store is good if you want to try the product out first and immediately buy it. But if you want upgrades, then the Apple Store online would be better. The only case where you should go with a third part reseller (IMO) is when they have a special deal going on.

Hmm results lean heavily towards direct from Apple.

I have a Best Buy fairly close by while Apple store is more of a hike, 10 minutes vs an hour.

Do I get the same support if buying from Best Buy? If I had trouble with, say an iPad, from BB and I took it to the Apple store would they tell me to pound sand (or at least take it where I got it)?

Well I always get my stuff on Craigslist. Lets see what I have from there so far:

MBP Unibody 17 inch
iPhone 3G 16Gig Black
iPhone 3G 16Gig White
iPhone 3G 8Gig Black
Brand new iPad 16g Wifi
iPod touch 1G 32Gig

The amount of money I spent on all these products together is probably less than what just the first item on this list costs(the MBP UB 17) in the Apple Store.

Obviously this route is not for everyone. Don't buy if you can't/won't fix your own problems.

But for apple products, the warranty is pretty good. I have sent in my MBP and got my iPad replaced(3times!) for dead pixels. So it doesn't matter where you buy.
