I had recently been in the market for a new macbook but have come under high money strains. I really enjoy OS X and dont feel comfortable messing with a hackintosh. where would you guys recommend looking for a G5 tower other than ebay. My price range is no more than $500.

There's a dual 2.0 Ghz G5 for $775 there. A little dated, but probably good enough for your needs. I still believe it'd be better if you invested in an iMac, possibly a 20 inch + another 20 inch monitor. Check out the iMacs there as well. They're used, but it'll tell you if it has "cosmetic" problems.
Oh and there's a single 1.6 Ghz G5 there for $499. Although I heard those are pretty slow...
