Where'd my iTunes playlists go???

Before switching to my new Mac I backed up my iTunes music via the Backup to Disc option. I selected "Backup entire iTunes library and playlists". However, when I went to restore it on my new Mac, it only restored the songs but not the playlists (or ratings, for that matter). Any idea how to get my playlists back? Or even just how to backup "properly" (i.e. save playlists, etc) for future reference? Anyone?

Maybe it was because it was a different version of iTunes and/or it was on a different Mac...who knows. Isn't Mac software supposed to "just work"?
