We are still waiting for Apple's long-rumored AirTag 2 to launch. Below, we recap the latest rumors about the item-tracking accessory.

In his Power On newsletter before WWDC, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that a new AirTag was "nearly ready" to launch. Last year, he said that it would be released around the middle of 2025, and the midpoint of the year is just two weeks away.

"The new AirTag is nearly ready, having been prepared for launch over the past several months," he said. However, he said that it was unlikely that Apple would announce the AirTag 2 during WWDC 2025 last week, and the developer conference indeed came and went without any new Apple devices or accessories being unveiled.

So, when? Apple typically does not hold any product events between WWDC and its annual iPhone event in September. Accordingly, if the mid-2025 launch timeframe for the AirTag 2 remains accurate, the accessory will likely be announced in a press release on the Apple Newsroom site. That would make sense for a minor accessory update.

Unfortunately, the exact timing is unclear at this point. The definition of mid-2025 can probably be stretched to include the month of September, so the AirTag 2 being announced alongside the iPhone 17 series is still a possibility too.

In any case, it is not a great time to buy the existing AirTag, unless you really need one or do not care about any of the potential new features.

Three upgrades have been rumored for the AirTag 2 so far:No major design changes are expected.

The original AirTag was announced during an Apple Event in April 2021. In the U.S., an individual AirTag costs $29, and a set of four costs $99.

Welcome to Gurman Rumors: first he writes the rumor, then he waits, then he says it has been delayed or canceled. No retractions or apologies. Just a lot of guesses that go nowhere. Where's my Apple Watch with a camera? Where's my HomePod with a screen?
Average MacRumors user when every single rumor isn’t true

Think a new one might come with iPhone 17. Other than extended range, not expecting anything new.

Surprise surprise. Another Mark "Throw **** At The Wall & See If It Sticks" Gurman, heh, "rumor" failing to materialize once again. And as usual Gurman will issue only excuses as to why or he'll claim it's been pushed back a bit so he can claim his original "prediction" wasn't wrong.

He's slowly morphing into Rob Enderle...

Apple Watch with a camera was supposedly cancelled to prioritize work on the Apple Glasses or something like that
Yeah... according to Gurman. But only Gurman ever said there was such a device and then he was also the one who said it was canceled. Did it ever exist? I know Apple does a lot of R&D, but Gurman keeps saying these are products and putting dates on them that never materialize. He has also seen testing of folding screens and has hypothesized every single kind of flip/fold iPhone/iPad/Mac possible to hedge his bets and quoted every year from 2026 to 2028.

I guess at some point there will be an Airtag 2. Perhaps they want to sell as much of the current Airtag 1 inventory during the travel season before releasing the new version? Airtag 1 is pretty good as it is, but as most things electronic there is always room for improvement and innovation. Looking forward to any improvements in functionality, battery life, etc.
PS: Perhaps a new Airtag 2 relies on new unannounced hardware/chip improvements in future iPhones and have to be announced around the same time?

Here’s the deal: at the very last minute, Apple discovered the AirTag 2 was not quite ready to be a game-changer than delighted customers and was truly the AirTag for ultra pros. So, Apple had to pull the AirTag to make sure it met their high standards. Because Apple is a tiny startup with limited resources dedicated to the ALL NEW OS 26, the AirTag got pushed to farther down the pipeline, better ensuring a clear upgrade path.

Rather than asking where the AirTag 2 is, we should be grateful that WWDC25 won’t go down in history as "that event where Apple only announced the AirTag 2."

Haha Gurman = most unreliable resource when it comes to rumors. Best not to pay attention and look at the apple website for factual announcements.

I just want an AirTag in a credit card format to keep in my wallet and with MagSafe charge. Other companies offer it and Apple should do it.

I really hope Apple ads a "theft protection" mode where the AirTag doesn't alert the thief that they're being tracked.

It's beyond stupid that there's an audible warning directing thieves to find & remove the tracker...

Or, maybe, they'll come out with a product intended for theft prevention... since that's not what AirTag is for.

That could be called "Theft Protection/Stalk Mode".
