So I got a 1/4" > 1/8" (3.5mm) adapter to hook up my electric guitar to my iMac. Unfortunately, the 1/8" adapter doesn't work. It sticks out of the jack. I did a google search and see that 3.5mm is the same as a 1/8" jack (just like the guy says in this video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kya4-PBqqgw

So what 1/4" > 1/8" adapter do I need for my iMac to make this work?

Your best bet is to get a proper interface for your guitar, it will work and sound much better than a simple cable.

I know a lot of people hate on the Line6 stuff, but you can find the discontinued Toneport GX in a lot of music shops for around $50. They work great and you can also use the included modelling software for a lot of cool effects. The current replacement product is the Guitarport, which runs about $99.

If you don't like Line6 gear, there are tons of other options from M-Audio, Behringer, among others, but they are all in a similar price range.
