Which 15" MBP config would you need to outperform 2015 iMac?

I've put my iMac 2015 up for sale (the one in my sig) and looking to get a 15" MBP.

For mixed use including FCPX and Logic Pro and bucket loads of chrome tabs which configuration MBP should I be looking at that would be at least equivalent to the iMac?

Can’t see your sig...what are the specs of your iMac? I would bet even the base 2.2 Hex Core 15 inch would do better than your 2015 iMac.

Let us know what your specs are.

Sorry about that. The specs of my iMac is

Late 2015 27" 5K
i7 4.0
512SSD
32GB RAM
R9 395X 4Gb

Just take the same specs on a Macbook. So:
core i7
512SSD
32GB RAM

Radeon 555x or 560x if you want to spend a hundred bucks extra, which I think is worth it.

That's the guess I'm planning on - uncertainty was mainly due to desktop components performing better than notebook it might not be like for like?

I suspect for my use case thought close enough will be good enough and I'm eyeing the $AU4099 model. i7/16/512/560X

Now to wait till the ebay sale completes...

My 2.2GHz is out performing my 2015 iMac. I didn't test, nor do I care about GPU performance but it seems for everything else, its faster.

I would think that just the speed of the 2018 SSD would make it much faster.

Comparisons do not matter so much to me, my 2018 is awesome!

Without question because my 2015 iMac uses the Fusion drive, so that's hamstrung due to the spinning drive.

Me neither, buy I was curious so I ran cinebench on my iMac and was surprised at the speed difference, but then its a newer generation CPU, that uses 6 cores

If it was me, I'd be looking at a 2017 midrange or top-level... 27" iMac.

I actually have no issue with the performance of my iMAc. It's great. I just have to be mobile now and can't afford to have two machines.

Your R9 395X is quite a bit faster than any MBP GPU (3.7 vs 2 Tflops). As for the CPU, every new MBP hex-core will be faster than the iMac. Also, SSD drives should be almost twice as fast on new MBPs, however that may not be so significant in real world performance, unless you deal with very large files.

So, if your workflow is GPU related, iMac should still be faster. If it's not GPU dependent, any of the new 15" MBPs will be faster than the iMac for multi-threaded tasks (and slower for single-threaded tasks, but in general, MBP will be faster). Older MBPs will be slower.

For FCPX and Logic Pro, any 2018 15" MBP should perform better.

Well, the main difference is thermals, so yes, laptop components use less power and throttle faster, etc. However, the 2018 15" MBPs will still be faster for your workflow.
