Hi guys

I’m happy with my Firestick, however I need AirPlay. I would also like to adjust the volume on my AirPods v2 which cannot be done on tv or Firestick.

If I’m buying Apple TV solely for these two purposes, can anyone recommend which version to get? I’m looking at 4 but as mentioned I just need the two features above

thanks guys

If you absolutely must solve this problem by getting an Apple TV, I'd get the 4K version. At least it will have some degree of future proofing (for a 3.5 year old product...), and could be resold. I wouldn't consider the previous generation unless it was very heavily discounted.

To be honest though, both are pretty poor value at this point. I like mine, but if it died, I wouldn't like-for-like replace it. I'd try to solve your problem another way - e.g. getting a different pair of earbuds.

Thanks guys

I don’t have a 4K tv so I think I’ll probably go for the 4. They are reasonably cheap, but as another poster said, it’s not the most impressive bit of Apple Kit - my Firestick is 100 times better

Any suggestions for the AirPlay issue that actually works..?

Well, if you must have AirPlay (and assuming you don't want to get a new Airplay compliant TV) then yes, you're stuck with the Apple TV's current rather uninspiring offerings.

At this point, as I said before, I would just get the 4K version unless you see a great discount. At least where I am, the 4th generation isn't _that_ much cheaper, and I think spending a little extra will probably pay off in terms of resale value/future proofing.

I’ll have a look. Tbh I’ve just read not all TVs are compatible with Apple TV. Mine isn’t 4K either, so this may be another issue.

Im now on Amazon looking at $20 dongles but none seem to work rofl

I wouldn't buy a AppleTV 4th gen unless I could get it for less than $100. If you have to pay more than that you might as well spend a little more to get the 4K model which is newer and will be supported much longer.

I own three of the 4th gen that get used often, and I have no issues with them, so I have nothing against them. I just think the 4K model is a much smarter buy at retail prices right now.

I have an Apple TV 4k, and I'm glad I bought that one, but agree with the comments here - it's not really a great buy right now, even if you can find it refurbished as I did. Have you considered a Roku 4k instead? I also have one of those (on a non-4k TV - none of mine are 4k TVs btw), and I believe it supports AirPlay (though you'll want to double check), and Roku has an amazing remote app that lets you connect wired headphones or Airpods to the Roku and you can private listen. It's literally the best thing. I think the model I got was the premiere (although I think they also have an HD only model), and I paid less than $25 around the Prime Day. It might work for what you need it for at not an expensive investment, giving you time to wait and see what Apple will do with its own device. (You can also watch your purchases from the iTunes store and shows from Apple TV+ thru the Roku, too).

i had the 4k amazon stick and purchased the apple tv $150 version after that HBO snafu and the tv put that to shame, the power chord is real, the TV gas a 32BG hard drive and the remote is incredible once ya get use to touching the buttons differently. i never had to reboot the tv and the wifi interface is worth the extra price. the light lets you know its on and the mdmi port is easy to plug in whereas the fire stick could not perform as well as the tv.

Beerstalker: do your 4th gen models (HD models) get adds on YouTube? Mine does. Reason I ask is I know people who have the 4k models (5th Gen) who don't get adds ( and aren' t subscribed or paying premium). Just wondering....Thanks.

thing is Firestick has tons of apps, and costs about 1/4 of the price. Now I’ve discovered Roku, I highly doubt I’d bother with Apple TV.

Try this app on the Amazon stick - dont use it as much these days but worked really really well.
