Im currently planning on getting an apple watch series 4 in aluminum, but im wondering if i should get the cellular option or the regular GPS one, also should I splurge for stainless steel

I went stainless for a couple reasons. Most importantly to me is the sapphire glass. It's more durable than ION and I tend to smash watch faces. It's heavier which is nice to remind me something is on my wrist. Stainless also goes with all the available bands where it seems aluminum is more limiting.

As to the cellular question, it doesn't become one with the stainless. But if you go aluminum, having cellular capability is nice to have for emergencies if you don't have a phone nearby. It shouldn't have to be on a plan for that either. If you do provide service to the watch, It's nice being able to get out of range of your phone and still take calls, send/receive messages, and if you want to stream music you can do that too.

I actually have both SS and Alu both silver. I tend to wear the Alum. the most it’s holding up very very well not a scratch screen or otherwise. Coming up on 3 months old on the alum. I really only ever wear the sports bands and only in like 4 colors. White, black, Midnight Blue and Fog. So they all go with both.

From what I've read, the SS is much more durable. That being said, I've owned S2. S3 and S4 in aluminum and haven't gotten one scratch on any of them. I chose aluminum because I like that it is light for running and every day use. The SS, to me, looks more like jewelry and has a more polished appearance; nicer for dressing up and work. The resale on the SS isn't terrific, so you may want to think about if you will want the latest/greatest every year or two or if you are going to keep your watch for a long time.

You can't go wrong either way! Just depends on what you will use it for most and what you want to pay.

I’ve owned a Series 0 space grey aluminum, Series 1 stainless steel and just got a Series 4 stainless steel a couple months ago. Stainless steel is the only way I’ll go anymore because of the sapphire crystal glass and the attractive and polishable case. That said, I know someone who got the Series 4 space grey and it seemed to look a lot nicer than the series 0 space grey all around. Overall, it’s just your calculus of whether spending the extra money is worth the increased durability. Do you mind much if your phone screen gets little scratches? Do you like the idea of being able to buff out scuffs on the casing? If your answers are yes it might be worth going stainless for you. Otherwise, aluminum is perfectly fine.

The series 5 will likely be quite a minor upgrade. Now is the time to get a watch that will last you until the next major design update, around 3 years. Stainless steel will hold up great up to then.

I have the SS and love it. I don’t worry about scratches. I agree the 4 was a big upgrade. Get what you can afford.

The only thing you’re really purchasing with the Stainless is aesthetics, aside from the Sapphire display. If you want the added protection on the display, the Sapphire display is very durable, and for me, that’s worth the price tag. But for others it may not be, as the aluminum is the more popular option in terms of resale and you have to consider, they both perform the same software.
