Hi, I'm trying to decide if I should get the Apple Watch SE 2022 now or wait for the Series 9/next watch that comes out. If I get the SE 2022 I'll probably get Apple Care for 2 years and keep it until the Apple Care expires. I currently have an Apple Watch Series 4 however the glass is broken (still works like normal though). Do the SE Watches keep their resale/trade-in value pretty well If I were to buy a watch now?

Thank you

No AW keeps their “value”, eg my S7 Ti is worth $140 at Apple, they are the worst product from that perspective.
Get a new one

The lower end watches keep their value better than the high end watches, relatively (unless you have a unicorn like a ceramic AW). You get very little back for the higher end finishes like SS or Ti.
Even so, after 2 years you will be lucky to get 50% back. Note that AppleCare will not cover scratches, which are considered cosmetic, but scratches are likely on an aluminum SE, and will affect the resale value.

Exactly true. A few weeks ago I traded my S7 41mm SS gold and only got $155 for it. I know I could get more selling it on my own but I don't want to deal with people.

Not wanting to deal with people is why I have a pile of old electronics that I have to figure out how to get rid of. I once tried selling an original iPad and the only offers I got were bartering a bunch of crap like old video cards. I always trade in instead of selling for this exact reason. Now I am just more likely to hold onto stuff instead of getting new stuff.

Yep, exactly. I still have my iPhone 6Plus, 7Plus and X but have traded my recent phones and iPads into Apple. At least they get more than watches which have really tanked in value. Dealing with some people and their tactics just isn't worth it to me.

I sell my stuff through sites like eBay sometimes. Not always you get a good price but definitely more than a trade with Apple. I also can avoid scam offers like you can get through Craigslist

Thank you for the responses, it sounds like I should just buy the new SE now with the expectation that I probably won’t get much trade in value when I’m ready to upgrade to a Series 9?

If it were me, I would just get an S8 now, and keep it until the S12 or whatever, as the lowest cost long term option. If it is just a month until S9, I would just wait, but it isn't. You don't even know what the S9 will be. Rumors about upcoming watches have had a very poor track record, until about a week in advance of the release, if then.

Unless there is something about the S8 you hate, and are hoping the S9 will maybe change?

I have an S8, and it is an excellent watch. Got it a couple of months ago when my S5 basically failed. No way was I going to get an SE and wait another year for an S9, that would have been a waste of money.

Like Wilberforce says above, I would suggest you to get a S8. Extra functions you get compared to a SE is worth that money. I don't know if Apple would bring a new processor to AW9 or not. The current processor is enough to run Watch OS for few more years. It's not like a phone where processors need to upgrade every year or two. I use an iPhone 12PM and I don't feel that I need more power. My AW ultra had the same processor like AW8 to drive a larger screen and extra features. A watch is not hungry for GPU power or other computational need as HW part is limited.

How about a used one. I’m just sold my six to a friend for $105 just what Apple was going to give on trade in. We were both happy

I gave myself c7 for the new year and I am very happy about it! the price is now humane on them. the truth had to sell ce 1 generation and meet people. I am an introvert
