First time buying an Apple Watch. I’m pondering between a SE or Series 8. And would it be okay if I want the large size? I’m petite but looking at a small screen at my age is struggle sometimes. 😂

Since you mentioned age, I think as we get older there is value in the EKG and fall detection. Even if you think everything is good right now, and assuming you’re right, it probably isn’t going to hurt to build up some health tracking history.

I’m 48 and good health generally, I believe, but I do like the more advanced health tracking.

All the same, SE is a great watch.

I have a 6 inch wrist and love wearing the 45mm …that being said I also have the 41mm for sleep and for exercising. Get the series 8. You’ll wish you had once you get used to it. If you can go to Apple and try them both on and see if you can live with the 41mm, they’re both good in my opinion.

Are you a veteran if so get your choice at a 10% discount. Watch for sales that periodically appear on Amazon. I am. Older and when my original Apple Watch finally dies last year I went with the series 8 as I wanted ,ore advance health tracking.

I’m 64, act like I’m 30, lol, but honestly have never had any health issues. I did have a bad case of Covid and it was a real eye opener for me. I’m a petite female and want to pay more attention to my health. Thank you for your input.

Not a veteran. I do want to start tracking my health and I’m tired of carrying my iPhone everywhere.

I also have a 6 inch wrist too. Thank you.

I am 70 and have worn Apple Watches since the first one came out. They are invaluable at tracking one’s health. I had long Covid and can actually look back and see where my resting heart rate skyrocketed when my blood oxygen levels dropped. Do not be concerned about the size of the Watch. Enjoy and good luck.

for all the 64-ish, but feeling 30-ish folks:

model: you will enjoy the apple Series 8 more than the limited feature set of the SE.*

41 vs. 45: regarding readability: truly a matter of only preference. no need to worry about the font size as its adjustable in terms of both font size as well as being able to make all letters bold if you want.

41 vs. 45: regarding overall appearance: truly a matter of only preference. if you want a discreet look, get the smaller one. but even if the 45 would appear big on yr wrist, an over-size look is often fashionable.

*Series 8 is also more likely to handle yearly software updates better than the SE.
there won't be any need to buy a new one until a new physical sensor of some sort is added to later models.

one more: there are a lot of people who report that the WiFi model is enough for them. for me however, i really wanted total freedom from the iPhone no matter if the iPhone is connected to the net or not. so i chose the cellular model.
i haven't regretted it.

Your first line make me literally laugh out loud. You’ve got it right though. 😂. I’m actually leaning towards your recommendation. If it looks like an ankle monitor on my small wrist, I still think the bigger watch would be conducive to my needs. Thank you.

Ankle bracelet!!! You almost made me spit coffee across the room!!! Don’t let anyone tell you it’s too big. I love the bigness on my 66 years young small wrist!!! And yes get cellular. We’re young and old enough to remember not needing to carry a phone with us every where we went…I can ride my bike all over my neighborhood and I don’t have a phone with me. You’ll get some of our lost freedom back.

I’m an Apple girl all the way but was never interested in a watch. Not my thing. But then I had months of insomnia so I wanted something to accurately track my sleep and then got the Apple Watch. I literally use it for way more than I thought I would.

I am 67 and have a small wrist. I like the larger size.

I just wish the fall detection was more accurate. It goes off all the time with me if I shake something or dig in the garden. However, the one time I did slip and fall on some ice last winter, it didn’t detect it. ☹️

I turned the fall detection off…one day when I get old I’ll turn it on 😉

I'm thinking the same thing. Mine will activate sometimes with the slightest jerk of my arm while doing light work. But I took a two step tumble down a dark stairway at an antique store, wound up on the floor and it didn't activate. My wife and I had a good laugh and I exclaimed that my watch didn't even notice it. Geez.

Only other considerations I'd add other than the added health features of the Series 8.

Always on display - the SE screen turns off/black after you're no longer "looking at it". You have to raise you wrist to have the screen turn on again. This was the main Apple Watches were like up until Series 4. Most ppl prefer to have it always on (it dims now when you're not actively lookig at it), but some don't. If you're one who prefers it off most of the time, something to consider.

Cost. Obviously, SE is cheaper than the Series 8.

Assuming you're fine with the cost for either and the cheaper price of the SE isn't a material factor, would also recommend you go with the Series 8.
