which SSD capacity rmb ps are people buying and why?

256GB.

the rMB is not my main Mac, it is a portable travel companion, which means I'm not going to be needing stacks and stacks of space. Plus my iTunes and Lightroom libraries need their own 2TB external drives anyway and would hence not fit on the 512GB drive.

I would go with 512, just because the scarcity of USB C thumb drives and the lack of any card ports like the Air/Pro have for adding space via card.

I did 256 because I keep everything in the cloud and I also have a wireless external flash drive If I needed it

Can't see exceeding 256gb any time soon. Only using 110gb on my 5 year old 11" MBA now. Might need more in five more years ;)

512 for me, 256 is too much of a balancing act in the field. Once back home I can prune the garbage from the 512 and not be concerned with space usage on the job.

Q-6

This. I was also one of those thinking 256 is plenty when I went from a 512gb MBA (2013) to a 256gb (2014) one. Found myself constantly compromising on space, so decided to go back to 512gb and is what I'd recommend anyone.

+1 for the 512

For me, 256 was probably going to be ok for a secondary machine. But given limited port/connectivity I don't think external HDDs are going to be a viable solution in future should free space run out...

This is my only machine. It feels GREAT to have 512 when I have been stuck on 120gb for the last 3 years!!!

Me too - was so full it was getting painfully slow!
I went for 512gb because I tend to keep a lot of photos and music on my MB. I also have an iMac but regard my MB as my main machine. The iMac is 512 and about 75% full.

I am going to try to be much more disciplined though about what I keep on the rMB

I was worried about only having 256; but since I will keep my huge photo file on my desktop and transfer from the MacBook, I should be fine. Plus I can access all my files from the cloud if I need them.

Went with 512gb because I'm just not a fan of external hard drives. They're slower than Apple's SSD and it's one more thing to carry. This is my travel computer too, as I have Mini for my office. I blew through a 128gb MBPr in 4 months and won't be going through that anxiety again.
